The past two weeks fifth-grade students at School Lane Charter School have been studying the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As a service-learning project, the students took part in a school-wide fundraiser to help the community ensure some basic human rights are met.

The fifth-grade students organized and ran a school-wide food drive. With the donated food, including turkey donated from a nearby food market, students prepared over 300 Thanksgiving dinners for AID for Friends Organization (Meals on Wheels). In addition, the fifth grade alone raised over $900.00 to donate to two separate local charities, AID for Friends Organization and Helen’s Angels.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides nutritious meals, socialization, and safety checks for seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to leave their homes. This organization plays a vital role in ensuring that those in need receive the support and care they deserve.

Each year, Meals on Wheels helps a significant number of people by delivering hot, nutritious meals directly to their homes. This not only helps those in need meet their basic nutritional needs but also provides them with a source of comfort and companionship. The delivery of these meals by volunteer drivers often serves as a daily check-in, providing peace of mind for both the recipient and their family members.

In addition to delivering meals, Meals on Wheels also provides a range of additional services to support those in need. For example, some programs offer grocery shopping and transportation assistance, as well as access to social activities and support groups. This helps people maintain their independence, dignity, and overall quality of life.

Meals on Wheels also conducts regular wellness checks, which help to ensure the safety and well-being of those who receive its services. This can include checking in on those who are ill, helping with household tasks, and providing assistance with personal care and other needs.

Each year, Meals on Wheels serves millions of meals to those in need, making a significant impact on the lives of seniors and people with disabilities. This organization relies on the support of volunteers, donations, and partnerships to continue its mission of serving those who are most vulnerable.

Overall, Meals on Wheels provides a vital service to those in need, helping to ensure that they receive the support and care they deserve. Its work makes a positive difference in the lives of those who benefit from its services, and the organization continues to play a critical role in addressing food insecurity and social isolation for seniors and people with disabilities.
