Families Call on Whitehall-Coplay to Rescind Dangerous Busing Policy for Charter School Students
The Issue
Parents, students, and charter school leaders from across the Lehigh Valley will attend the Whitehall-Coplay School District (WCSD) Board Meeting to publicly oppose and demand the reversal of a new transportation policy. The policy removes yellow school bus service for resident charter school students aged 12 and older, replacing it with LANTA public transit passes.
Severe Safety & Logistical Concerns:
- Excessive travel times (up to two hours each way).
- Multiple bus transfers and lengthy, unsheltered waits.
- Substantial walking distances, often without paved sidewalks.
- Hazardous road crossings, specifically across MacArthur Road.
- The unreasonable burden placed on 12- and 13-year-olds (including those with IEPs) to navigate complex transit routes alone.
- The splitting of siblings onto completely different transportation methods.
