I Went From 1 View to 10,000+ in 30 Days: LinkedIn Post Strategy
Good content is like a door. It will open you to a world of opportunity. But the door itself is not enough. To open any door, you must first unlock it. You need a key. Good content is your door to new business and success.
LinkedIn is the key to making that happen. And so, to unlock that door, you need to follow a few important steps. No matter who you are or how good your content is, you need use your key to open the door. If you’re reading this blog, you either are frustrated by getting no results on your posts or insufficient results. We are going to change that. Having only one view on your LinkedIn posts is frustrating. It can make you doubt if your network is seeing your content. However, it’s even worse than that. A “view” on LinkedIn actually has a specific and somewhat limited definition, and there are many factors that can contribute to low visibility beyond the intrinsic value of your post. By working on both scenarios, you can exponentially increase views dramatically in less than a month—and, if you post enough intriguing LinkedIn content, you could notice a drastic change in a few days.
To learn how to increase views per post, and ultimately generate new business, it is essential to understand a little bit about how LinkedIn’s algorithm penalizes and rewards users, what causes users to click on content as they scroll, and when its best to post along with how often you should do so. Taking one step at a time and remaining peristent will result in drastic changes sooner than later. By following the steps below, you should see significant improvement within in a month, and if your content is intriguing, it could happen within days.
Understanding “post views” on LinkedIn
- A LinkedIn post view is registered every time your post appears in someone’s feed.
- This metric does not indicate that the user read or engaged with the content; it simply means the post was visible on the screen as the person scrolled.
- This means it’s possible to accrue “views” from people quickly scrolling past your post without actually engaging with it.
- And so, that “one view” probably equals zero LinkedIn views!
Reasons for low views on LinkedIn posts
- Content Relevance and Quality:
• If your posts aren’t relevant or intriguing to your connections, people will scroll past without engaging, resulting in low views.
• Promotional content can deter engagement. - Network Size and Activity:
• A smaller network means fewer potential viewers.
• Your posts may not be seen by your connections if they don’t use LinkedIn.
• Posts getting views also attract “likes.” That’s why growing your network is crucial. - LinkedIn’s Algorithm:
• The LinkedIn algorithm prioritizes posts that get early engagement and deems them valuable, showing them to a wider audience within your network and potentially beyond.
• If your post doesn’t receive early engagement (likes, comments, shares), the algorithm might not push it out to a larger segment of your network. - Content Format:
• The algorithm often deprioritizes posts with external links, as LinkedIn aims to retain users on the platform. While this is hypocritical on LinkedIn’s part, it’s a fact. Posting links to interesting articles and YouTube videos will drive up engagement, yet LinkedIn will penalize you for doing so.
• Different types of content on LinkedIn (text, images, videos, carousels, polls) generate different engagement rates, and sticking to just one format might limit your reach. - Posting Schedule:
• If you post at times when your target audience is less active, your content might get fewer initial views, impacting its overall reach.
• Post when your target audience is working. Many people will use employer time for social media more than their time with family. - Profile Optimization:
• An incomplete or poorly optimized profile can hinder discoverability and may lead to fewer people engaging with your posts (see below for more details). - Lack of Engagement with Others:
• Social media is a mutually beneficial exchange. If you’re not engaging with other users’ content, the algorithm might not prioritize yours either. Interact with other people’s posts on LinkedIn to boost your views.
Tips to Get Noticed on LinkedIn and for Getting More Views
Having a regular LinkedIn presence is essential for marketers and B2B professionals alike. By implementing effective tactics, you can get more views on your LinkedIn posts and attract a broader audience. Following are some valuable tips to help you enhance your LinkedIn presence and increase LinkedIn views.
- Create engaging, valuable content: Focus on sharing insights, tips, or stories that resonate with your target audience.
- Encourage interaction: Ask questions, run polls, and respond to comments promptly to spark conversations and boost visibility.
- Optimize your posting times: Research when your audience is most active and schedule your posts accordingly. This expands the above recommendation. For example, you want to target your audience during work hours. Determine which timeframe they are most active, whether first thing, midday, or end of the day.
- Vary your content formats: Experiment with images, videos, carousels, polls, and LinkedIn Live to see what works best for your audience.
- Engage with your network: Like, comment, and share other people’s posts to build relationships and increase your visibility. People who attract many views typically share content from other LinkedIn users as part of their strategy.
- Use relevant hashtags and tags: Strategically include hashtags to broaden your reach and tag relevant people or companies where appropriate. You know—those cheesy things people use hashtags for to express themselves—avoid that behavior at all costs.
Explore Topics that Get More Views on LinkedIn than Most People
Your content strategy should include exploring trending topics relevant to your industry or expertise. This is essential for increasing the visibility of your LinkedIn posts and, ultimately, your number of views. Start by reviewing other people’s LinkedIn feeds. Follow key influencers and organizations in your field to stay updated on the latest discussions and emerging trends.
Engage LinkedIn’s search feature to discover popular posts and articles, paying attention to the hashtags and themes that resonate with your audience. Engaging with relevant content by commenting or sharing can also help you identify what captivates your network.
Use tools like Google Trends, BuzzSumo, and even LinkedIn groups to analyze popular topics and tailor your posts accordingly. By aligning your content with trending subjects, you can attract more views and foster meaningful connections on LinkedIn.
Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile to Get Views
An essential part of your LinkedIn strategy is optimizing your personal brand. As a publicist, I am privileged to work with celebrities, most of whom are musicians or actors. Their stage presence and how they present themselves in interviews and online constitute a large part of their personal brand.
Influencers are similar. Their personalities (personal brand) contribute as much to their “social media fame” as does their knowledge or expertise.
Want to be an industry rock star? Start by working on your personal brand. While we cover that topic on another blog, for now, we’ll focus on optimizing your LinkedIn profile. By doing so, you will increase your chances of getting noticed by more people. Be sure to ensure your profile is complete and professional to enhance discoverability. Show your personality with finesse—don’t go overboard, as intended humor can easily be misinterpreted on a platform with a greater propensity of attracting the uptight kind of individual.
Thoroughness is essential. By including your company profile, where you went to school, your past jobs, and titles you’ve held, you’ll increase the chances of coming up in various search results. Also include a professional profile photo.
Whether people who find you based on a search keyword engage with you doesn’t matter as much as the fact that LinkedIn’s algorithm will detect an uptick in profile views. When that happens, the algorithm will begin to recommend your profile to others. Not only will that make your posts more noticed, it will help with lead generation. The more you are on LinkedIn, the greater your reach and engagement will become. Begin with your stage presence, and the rest will fall in line.
As referenced above, your LinkedIn engagements are crucial, and they are directly proportional to your online growth if you offer engaging content. Like any other social media platform, LinkedIn rewards those who show up regularly and penalizes those who only pop in from time to time. Frequent posting will increase LinkedIn’s algorithm’s contact with you. The more valuable your post content is to your audience, the more you boost your visibility.
But how often should you post? Do you need to post multiple times a day to become successful? We’ve all seen those who seem to post nonstop and may have blocked a few of those characters. Everywhere Marketer points out that LinkedIn recommends posting at least once or more every day, with the ideal frequency being at least once a day to engage followers effectively. Some users said they post at least once a week to increase their visibility.
It’s not just frequency you need to consider. You need to get to know your LinkedIn audience. What kind of content do they like? Watch their behaviors with other people who are active on LinkedIn. What triggers their likes and comments? Do they post on LinkedIn multiple times per day or week, or are they less aggressive?
Frequency of posting depends on your profession, your industry, the solutions you provide, etc. For example, an Etsy artist and a corporate marketing executive will need far different posting strategies. Here’s where trial and error come in. Again, knowing the days and times to post is crucial. The difference between posting one hour or the next can mean the difference of 21x more views.
Begin Today to Get Noticed On LinkedIn
For a blog promising quick tips to make you visible on LinkedIn, the information might seem overwhelming. And it is. If social media virality were effortless, it would reach everyone. It takes a lot of work. But don’t let that stop you from starting. Break it down into manageable steps. Make a list to simplify the process. Check off one thing at a time as you advance. A simple list to start with could look like this:
- Know what kind of content you want to post. This will help you categorize your content.
- Determine the best days and times to post. Start by watching when your audience is active.
- Use LinkedIn hashtags prudently. Study which ones are trending in your industry or line of work and include the best ones at the bottom of your posts.
- Help your profile show your “stage presence.” Fill it out completely and put some thought into the personality you want to project.
- Include a professional profile picture on your LinkedIn page. It need not be a traditional studio portrait. Since a picture can say 1,000 words, pick one that conveys or supports your messages.
- Customize your LinkedIn profile URL. Mine is https://www.linkedin.com/in/kenkilpatrickpr. My former LinkedIn account URL ended with /SylviaMarketing, which is better as it’s my company’s name. Unfortunately, LinkedIn doesn’t allow account profile URLs to be recycled. Choose yours thoughtfully.
Begin with that simple list, then write a new one for the next steps. Repeat the process. Doing so will help keep you from becoming overwhelmed, as well as magnify the importance each step holds.
Keep in mind, going viral on LinkedIn is nice, but it’s not the goal here—increased visibility is. Nobody got rich from a viral cat meme. You want solid posts to increase your visibility on your LinkedIn platform to capture new leads, book new business, launch new ventures, etc. Instagram is a better venue for a popularity contest. By understanding how LinkedIn’s algorithm works and implementing these strategies in this blog, you will improve the visibility and engagement of your posts beyond just one view. Remember, boosting views and post clicks requires strategic thinking and experimentation. The best thing you can do is start today and post relevant information at least three times a week.
